About Atal Bhujal Yojana 2025
The Central Government has launched Atal Bhujal Yojana to promote sustainable groundwater management in seven identified water-stressed states. It focuses on community participation and managing groundwater demand. This scheme supports the Jal Jeevan Mission by improving water source sustainability, contributes to doubling farmers’ income, and aims to change community behaviour for better water use. A total of 6000 crore rupees will be spent on this scheme. Half of this amount, 3000 crore rupees, is a loan from the World Bank, and the other half is the Government of India’s contribution.
Funds will be given to states as grants to implement the scheme. It operates in 8353 water-stressed gram panchayats across Haryana, Gujarat, Karnataka, Madhya Pradesh, Maharashtra, Rajasthan, and Uttar Pradesh.
Update – May 29 – Extension of Atal Bhujal Yojana
The National Level Steering Committee (NLSC) has extended the scheme period by 2 years. Originally ending in 2025, the scheme will now continue until 2027. This extension allows citizens of gram panchayats to get benefits till 2027. Farmers engaged in irrigation will also gain from this.
Extension aims to address delays caused by the COVID-19 pandemic and support ongoing collective behavior changes. Besides conservation, the scheme encourages new irrigation technologies to increase water efficiency. Started in 2024, Atal Bhujal Yojana is active in 8220 gram panchayats across 80 districts in states like Uttar Pradesh and Gujarat. It promotes community behavior changes and smart water management.
