The Government of Tamil Nadu has introduced the Tamil Nadu Urban Employment Scheme with the objective of providing job opportunities and social security through the development and maintenance of public assets. This scheme will commence as a pilot project in two zones of Chennai, alongside coverage in 14 municipal corporations, 7 municipalities, and 37 districts for the year 2024-25. The estimated budget allocated for this initiative is Rs 100 crore.
This scheme is grounded on the recommendations of a committee headed by former Reserve Bank of India governor C Rangarajan. Notably, 50% of jobs created will be reserved for women, and both women and men will receive equal pay for equivalent unskilled and semi-skilled tasks.
