Understanding the Khela Hobe Scheme 2025 for MGNREGS Card Holders
After the central government stopped funding MGNREGS in West Bengal, Mamata Banerjee, the Chief Minister of Bengal, launched the Khela Hobe Scheme. This new scheme aims to give guaranteed work to MGNREGS job card holders in the state. Earlier, Bengal provided 26 days of work under NREGS for these workers, and now this has been raised to 30 days to better support rural communities.

About Khela Hobe Scheme 2025
When the central government stopped funding the 100-day job scheme in January 2024, Bengal faced a challenge. To cover this gap, the state government introduced the Khela Hobe Scheme to help MGNREGS card holders get work. At its peak, 2.6 crore people worked under NREGS in Bengal, but that number dropped to about 1.4 crore, which affects the rural economy a lot. These workers include 8% Scheduled Tribes and nearly 28.5% Scheduled Castes. Even though Bengal achieved the best results running the program over five years, the central government stopped financial support.
During the Martyrs Day rally, Mamata Banerjee said the central government delayed over Rs 60,000 crore of Bengal’s funds, which rightfully belong to the state. She criticized local BJP leaders for blocking funds meant for public welfare despite collecting GST from Bengal.
