Himachal Pradesh Chief Minister Thakur Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu announced the Mukhyamantari Sukh Aashray Yojana on 16 February 2024. This government scheme focuses on adopting over 6,000 orphaned children in Himachal Pradesh as “Children of the State.” The government will fully take responsibility for their upbringing, education, shelter, and other needs. This scheme also includes orphaned and specially-abled children, homeless women, and senior citizens. A budget of Rs. 101 crore has been set aside to run this important scheme successfully.

4th Oct Update – On 3 October, CM Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu gave Rs. 4.68 crore to 2,466 homeless children under the Chief Minister Sukh Aashray Yojana at a public event in Shimla. Nearly 900 children attended the function at Shimla’s historic Ridge Ground. The CM said that Himachal Pradesh is the first state in the country to make laws protecting orphans and other disadvantaged groups. Besides financial help, 30 children also received advanced laptops, with plans to provide laptops soon to 298 other students studying in 11th and 12th grades.
