Minimum Support Price 2024: Ensuring Fair Crop Prices for Farmers

MSP is the least price that the government promises to pay farmers for their crops. The government cannot buy crops at a price lower than MSP. Currently, the central government offers MSP for 23 different crops. These include 7 cereals (paddy, wheat, maize, bajra, jowar, ragi, and barley), 5 pulses (chana, tur, urad, moong, and masoor), 7 oilseeds (rapeseed-mustard, groundnut, soybean, sunflower, sesame, kusum, niger seed), and 4 commercial crops (cotton, sugarcane, copra, and raw jute). You can check your name in the Kisan Samman Nidhi list here.

MSP helps both farmers and consumers by fixing a fair price. The prices are declared every year based on recommendations by the Commission for Agricultural Costs and Prices (CACP). The central and state governments take these recommendations to decide the MSP for various crops.

Update from Uttar Pradesh: Paddy Buying Policy Approved for 2024-25

On 12th September, the Uttar Pradesh cabinet approved the purchase policy for paddy under the Minimum Support Price scheme for the Kharif marketing year 2024-25. The government plans to buy 70 lakh tons of paddy through six agencies and 4,000 purchasing centers. Farmers will receive payment within 48 hours via the government’s PFMS portal.

Before selling paddy, farmers must register online. Purchases will be made using biometric confirmation with electronic POS machines. Farmer Producer Organizations (FPOs) and Farmer Producer Companies (FPCs) affiliated with mandi councils can also buy paddy under this policy.

MSP Covers 25 Major Agricultural Crops

This scheme ensures farmers get at least 50% profit over the cost of production. If farmers get better prices than MSP from private buyers, they are free to sell to them.

Started in 1966, MSP is announced annually for 25 main crops — including 14 Kharif crops and 7 Rabi crops. In 2024-25, around 2.04 crore farmers benefited from MSP. This program helps empower farmers and improve their living standards by giving a fair price for their crops.

This scheme protects farmers from low prices, strengthens their financial status, and helps improve their living conditions. Also, consumers benefit by getting crops at reasonable prices.

MSP is announced considering the advice of the Commission for Agricultural Costs and Prices (CACP) each year and is implemented by the central and state governments.
